Lori Wightman
Lori’s deep roots in the Essex riding first took hold growing up in the small community of River Canard, which sits on the border of the municipalities of Lasalle and Amherstburg. She makes her home today in the town of Amherstburg.
Growing up as the daughter of small business owners, Lori saw firsthand the struggles of the working class and as a teen, a meeting with then NDP candidate Steven Langdon sparked a lifelong connection with the ideals of the NDP movement. Lori has been a library worker for over two decades doing work that allows her to meet, interact with, and learn from folks from all walks of life. She has seen up close how social programs and public funding can change lives, especially those who are most vulnerable.
Lori is a long-time advocate for workers’ rights and has a strong track record of holding those in power accountable. She held a leadership position in her CUPE union local for 13 years and led the 2016 Essex County Library Workers strike which lasted an astonishing 8 months. Lori believes in not only leading but in standing alongside those who need their voices amplified. Lori has advocated for precarious workers, for our health care system, and for her community by lending support to various groups and organizations including the Amherstburg Community Foundation as both Administrative Director and President.
As a mother and grandmother, Lori believes that we must make decisions and choices now to ensure a strong, healthy, and successful future for upcoming generations. She knows that with a people-first government, an equitable and affordable Canada is possible.
